Teen Alcohol Abuse, The Relationship Between Excessive Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Education

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics demonstrate the fact that alcohol abuse among adolescents is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Many alcoholism authorities think that wine, beer, and liquor advertisements produced by the media are a fundamental reason for the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse.

Other chemical dependency professionals articulate that the increase in teenage alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of wine, beer, and liquor in our society. Still other alcohol abuse consultants state that quite a few of our teens involve themselves in hazardous drinking because of the increased anxiety that they go through.

From a somewhat different outlook, because both parents in more than a few families work, the lack of parental supervision definitely has to play a key part in the rise in teenage alcohol abuse. And as a final point, a variety of chemical dependency authorities think that the rise in teenage alcohol abuse is due, in some measure, to our lenient society.

One aspect of adolescent alcohol abuse that looks like it is somewhat missing in the alcoholism research findings, nonetheless, is the dearth of educational programs that teach teenagers how to enhance their coping skills so that their unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior is notably diminished or done away with. More precisely, science has displayed the fact that there is an indirect association between poor coping skills and abusive and excessive drinking.

Essentially, this means that the worse the coping skills, the greater the prevalence of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is an accurate declaration, why isn't coping skills education an essential part of the academic curriculum in all of our junior high schools, elementary schools, and high schools?

Let us construct a scenario for for the purpose of elucidation. Let us imagine a society in which all people are trained how to develop first rate coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets demanding, students who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more rewarding manner, as opposed to others who fail to put their coping skills into operation.

More precisely, students who demonstrate excellent coping skills will be more able to think proactively and exhibit excellent decision making as opposed to adolescents who, because they do not possess outstanding coping skills, are drawn to the "quick fix" of hazardous and abusive drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, additionally, if teens not only received top shelf coping skills education but also obtained an exclusive education that highlighted the short term and long term damaging results associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills education, it is pronounced, would help teens steer clear of the clear charm related to teen drinking and, as a consequence, would significantly lessen the harmful drinking behavior undertaken by teens in our country.

There are clearly more than a few convincing reasons why so many of our adolescents drink in an excessive manner. Such a complex subject demands an extensive and more meaningful response by our students, educators, politicians, and parents so that our teens can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more fruitful and responsible way rather than gravitating to hazardous and excessive drinking to solve their difficulties.
