Harmful Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Spouse, And Motivation For Affirmative Change

It took many years but Sarah finally made up her mind that she had enough with her husband's unhealthy and excessive drinking. She was weary from seeing Keith come home after 1:00 AM from drinking rather than spending time with her and their two sons. She was also weary from the second DWI Keith recently received. Furthermore she was worn-out from creating excuses for her spouse when he couldn't show up for work on time due to his abusive and unhealthy drinking.

In a similar manner, she was apprehensive about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Keith's abusive drinking. And lastly she was weary from the perilous financial quandary into which he had put his family because of his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior.

One Friday afternoon when Sarah was thinking about what she could do about her husband's abusive drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something positive to cut into the harmful cycle of Keith's abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the local yellow pages under "alcohol rehab" and discovered several treatment clinics that were all located less than fifteen miles away from where Keith and she resided.

When Sarah called each rehab clinic she identified who she was and stated that Keith, her husband, was involved in abusive drinking behavior. She also articulated that her husband had a quality health insurance program at his place of employment and that residential or outpatient alcoholism treatment would be covered if a health care professional in the company health plan prescribed the rehab.

After listening to Sarah describe her husband's careless and excessive drinking, the doctor in a supportive but resolute way told Sarah how she may have contributed to her spouse's abusive and hazardous drinking through the months and the years. How? Basically by covering for him instead of letting him go through the consequences of his abusive drinking behavior.

Stated somewhat more forcefully, the psychologist stated to Sarah that she may have been accidentally enabling Keith's abusive drinking behavior. The doctor also underlined the point that Sarah could not control her husband's behavior. With the support and guidance of the rehabilitation team at the rehab facility, conversely, she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Keith's unhealthy and excessive drinking but she could also learn how to encourage him to schedule an appointment at the treatment facility so that he could talk about his abusive drinking behavior with a doctor.

The good news was that after Sarah mentioned this to her husband and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been quite troubled by his careless and excessive drinking behavior and that he was quite relieved to know that Sarah wanted to do something constructive about his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior. As a result, he made an appointment to see a physician at the local alcohol treatment center.

While simply calling a rehab center does not guarantee that a person's unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior will stop or that a person will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is unmistakably a much needed step in the rehab process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting rehab for his abusive drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was considerably increased.
