An Unstable High School Student Displays More Than A Few Alcohol-Related Problems, Gets Expelled From School, And Has To See The School Psychologist
Stephen was a sixteen year old high school junior who was exhibiting several alcohol-related difficulties at school. For that reason, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be permitted to return to class.Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to clarify his school expulsion to his parents. His parents were "relatively old fashioned" and informed Stephen that getting discharged from school was not a workable educational game plan. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would probably be like a lead weight around his ankles that might hurt his educational aspirations for the rest of his life. Moreover, Stephen's Mother and Father were very unhappy that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his friends in the second.
It was clear that his Mom and Dad were out-and-out in full agreement with Stephen's principal and told Stephen that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school counselor. After his dialogue with his Mom and Dad, Stephen in due course agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen called the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during lunch.
When Stephen went to see Miss Pender, she without pause examined all of the alcohol-related issues Stephen had experienced and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related actions were such a cause for concern.
Quite truthfully, Stephen questioned why the principal told him he had to see a school therapist. As he expressed to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional psychologist about his drinking circumstances? Since virtually all of his friends drink about as much as he does, drinking really shouldn't be such a big deal. Stated differently, if nearly everybody is drinking, why is this such a big thing?
In a word, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to thwart his ability to function as a responsible young man. As articulated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your pals drink alcohol does not mean that it is the healthiest thing for you."
Luckily, Miss Pender was very organized for her discussion with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had underlined that listed different drinking facts and statistics that applied to most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a lot of figures and reports that applied chiefly to teens.
After Miss Pender went over the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was obvious that what Miss Pender revealed to Stephen was a wake up call for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only took the time to put in plain words the long term and the short term effects of alcoholism and alcohol abuse, but she also took the time to corroborate what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction facts and statistics that related to everyone, and particularly to young people.
As a matter of fact, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen promptly comprehended why he should not be engaging in abusive and excessive drinking with or without his buddies anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the material she went over and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
